How to Replace an Audi  G28  Engine Speed Sensor

Charles the Humble Technician teaches how to replace the G28 Engine Speed Sensor. This sensor is situated at the edge of transmission, above the flywheel gear. It transmits a signal to the ECU through the grey wire T55/49 and then to the tachometer located on the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

Located on the edge of the transmission, above the flywheel ring gear G28 Engine Speed Sensor sends signals to ECU pin T55/49 via the grey wire. The ECU then utilizes this information to regulate the boost, fuel, and timig. It also sends a signal to the G5 tachometer in the instrument cluster.

The sensor serves as a reference point to connect with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor. The ecu needs to know when the crankshaft is TDC and where the camshaft is so it can trigger spark and injectors accordingly.

If this sensor fails the ECU will throw an error code P00160 which indicates that the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft are not in sync, possibly indicating the chain is stretched or a jump link on the upper timing chain. The code won't appear without the additional information provided by other sensors (G4 or G40).

Testing is a bit tricky since there are two pins for the connector and they have different functions but the most effective method of testing it is to measure the resistance between the sensor and the ECU. If the sensor is functional, it should read approximately 1000 ohms. If you're experiencing issues with this part, check for signs of coolant or oil in the connector bay.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, as i was accelerating off the highway paytoll at maximum speed I noticed a significant drop in power. It was as if the engine had run out of gas. Or my injectors weren't firing. Today, i pulled out the spark plugs. Three were drenched with gazoline the fourth one was dry. When I crank the engine without sparks, I put a piece of tissue on the top of each hole in the injector and the 3 that were drenched in gazoline pop out, but the 4th stays closed. I inspected the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55, 30/55 and 48/55. I got 0ohm. I'm assuming that the issue is somewhere else.

I also tried to reset PID but without success. The car can start if the G28 is not plugged in and it runs perfectly when it is connected, but still is experiencing intermittent misfires at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62) even when unplugged, still shows temperatures of -49c. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bar but the actual pressure is 0.

I'm not certain what to do, but i feel i have pretty much ruled out everything else. However, i'm afraid that I might have missed something. If anyone has any suggestions, please share them! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump of the g28 receives signals from the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter is identical to the G4 sender, and both operate on the 80,100,200, UrS, and RS2 vehicles. You can easily locate an extra in a wrecking shop or parts store. It is easy to test them: simply switch your DMM into resistance mode and determine the distance between pins 1 and 2 (with the bump on the connector's edge facing upwards). They must be infinite Ohms.

4. ECU



Our 20vt turbo (3B AAN, ABY, and ADU) engines have an ECU that must be aware of the speed and position of the crankshaft in order to make decisions regarding timing of the fuel injector, for example. It uses a Crank Position Sensor G4 and an Engine Speed Sensor G28 to achieve this. If either of these goes badly, you will see codes on the diagnostic scanner that can lead to engine shutdown.

A malfunctioning G28 sensor could cause an inaccurate speed counter for your gearbox, a gearbox that shifts more quickly than normal, and/or a misfire while in the gear. If you have any of these issues it is most likely that your sensor is failing and should be replaced. The good news is they are very affordable and readily available, especially in the case of a Bosch unit like ours. If you prefer, GM's version of this part would be an option.

5. Tachometer

A damaged engine sensor could cause a myriad of issues in your car. It's an essential component of the transmission of your Audi since it sends information to the ECU regarding how fast or slow the engine of the car is turning. If the sensor fails, it could disrupt the performance of the transmission as well as the other car's components.

The G5 engine speed sensor is located at the outside of the transmission, above the flywheel ring gear and transmits a signal to the ECU at pin T55/49 via an uncolored wire. The ECU is then able to process the signal to control the flow of fuel, timig and boost, and also transmitting it to the G5 tachometer in the instrument cluster. You can check for sensor failure by examining the continuity of the sensor to the tachometer. Also, you can check continuity between pin T55/49 of the ECU and pin T6a/1 of the instrument cluster (trace [79]) and between pin T6a/1 and pin T26a/12. It should show approximately 1000 ohms of resistance between those points. This is a common part across the Audi 80 100 200, UrS and RS2 range from 1985 MC until the 1997 UrS AAN and 1995 RS2 ADU so good ones might be availble in wrecking yards.
